The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR)
has been established by the Science and
Technology Department, Government of Gujarat
in 2003 and is registered as a Society.
ISR
campus is coming up at Raisan,
Gandhinagar in a sprawling and
picturesque area on the banks of
Sabarmati river. Aims and objectives
include assigning optimum seismic
factors for buildings in different
regions and long-term assessment of
earthquake potential. The ISR is the
only institute in India fully
dedicated to seismological research
and is planned to be developed into
a premier International institute in
few years time.
Staff and Research Programs: At present 21
scientists are working and many more are
being recruited. A number of major research
projects have been initiated.
Earthquake
Monitoring Program:
A network of 22 permanent seismological
observatories is established with state of
art digital broadband seismographs. The
seismic data from these observatories are
downloaded at Gandhinagar via VSAT. The
seismic activity is monitored round the
clock. The details of any regional
earthquake are reported within few minutes.
In addition to this a network of 40 Strong
Motion Accelerographs (SMA) is also
established to record strong ground motions.
GPS Monitoring
for Crustal Deformation:
The ISR has initiated a major program for
the study of crustal deformation by
establishing GPS stations across all
geological faults in Gujarat.
Microzonation
Program:
ISR is carrying out Microzonation of
Gandhinagar and few areas of Kachchh. It is
seen from the study done so far in and
around Gandhinagar that the soil in the area
has strong bearing capacity. There is no
site amplification for the frequency range
of 1-6 Hz which means that one to ten storey
buildings in and around Gandhinagar can be
constructed by norms already in place.
ISR is establishing three Multiparametric
Geophysical observatories in Kuchchh for the
earthquake prediction research.
Geophysical Data
Centre:
ISR is establishing a Geophysical data
centre for the first time in India. It will
have different Geophysical data sets,
information about current earthquakes,
catalogues of earthquakes in different
states and GIS based intelligent earthquake
hazard maps.
