Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre
Overview
Government of Gujarat has recognized the importance of biotechnology and its potentiality since 2004. With an equation of BT+BT=BT i.e. Bharat Today + Biotechnology = Bharat Tomorrow. For promoting translational Biotechnology Research in the state ecosystem, Department of Science and Technology has created Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, an autonomous Organization in the year 2017. The core focus of the centre is to identify sectoral needs in Healthcare, Agriculture, Environment, Industrial, Marine etc. and providing biotechnology-based solutions for the same. It is also acting as state-of-the-art Shared Laboratory Facility for researchers, academicians, students, start-ups and Industries of the State
When institute was formed and with which GR:
GR: BTM-102016-299-BT dated 11-08-2017. Commencement on 01-09-2017
Vision
- Harness biotechnology to solve health, agriculture, industry, environmental, marine, and societal challenges.
Mission
- Promoting optimal health for humans, animals, plants, and the environment
- Harnessing diverse potential of microbial and bio-resources to drive sustainable development and innovation
- Leveraging the power of biotechnology for advanced biomanufacturing solutions and enhancing sustainability
About the institute
Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre is based in Gandhinagar. The centre has over 25 Scientific and Technical Staff along with nearly 80 research scholars. GBRC is equipped with high end infrastructure in Genomics, Proteomics, Bio-banking and Bioprospecting. The centre is running various competitive grants and research programs funded by international, national, and state Government agencies. The network of the shared laboratory facility user of GBRC is extended to most of the academic, research and industrial ecosystem. Students and Start-ups are provided 50% subsidy on Shared lab usage. The entire facility is run on real time online booking system. The centre is running various skill development and capacity building programs with name ‘KAUSHALYA’ in the cutting-edge biotechnology. GBRC is also providing services to industry, start-ups, and academia in the field of biotechnology. GBRC is also developing India’s 2nd State of art BSL4 facility with ABSL3 set up at the cost of Rs. 225 crores, wherein 14 Acres of land has been allotted in Gandhinagar, Gujarat
Important Projects and Programs of the centre are as follows:
- Deep Ocean Misson by Ministry of Earth Sciences, GoI
- Genomic Selection work in Cattle and Buffalo
- Environmental Surveillance of LSDV, FMDV and Bird Flu funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USA
- Network Program on AMR Superbugs and One Health
- One Health Poultry Hub supported by UKRI under GCRF: 55 Investigators from 9 countries
- Genome India Initiative supported by DBT, GoI: 21 partner organizations, 10000 Genomes of Indians
- INSACOG: Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia for sentinel and sewage surveillance
Technologies Developed by GBRC:
- Technology for detection of Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2
- Amplicon panel for diagnosis of Muscular Dystrophies (MDs)
- Amplicon panel for diagnosis of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC)
- Kit for sex determination in date palm
- Technology for recombinant serratiopeptidase production
- Dengue serotype diagnostic kit
- Detection of adulteration in herbal formulations
- Probiotics for the treatment of endometritis
- Technology for recombinant tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA)
Moreover, GBRC played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic. The institute sequenced over 14,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes, establishing itself as a leader in genomic surveillance. Moreover, GBRC became one of the pioneer labs in India to establish waste water based epidemiology of COVID-19 which later was referenced in WHO Guidelines. With its pioneering contribution now GBRC is part of the GLOWACON: A global initiative for wastewater surveillance for public health established by European Union, WHO, US-CDC, African CDC and BMGF. Centre along with Hester Biosciences also secured funding of Rs. 60 Crores for developing Vaccine Production Facility. As an ICMR-approved RT-PCR lab, GBRC performed over 10,000 COVID-19 tests and published more than 20 research articles in international peer reviewed journals including in Nature. GBRC also demonstrated how host-pathogen interactions differ depending on a person's genetic makeup.
